Santa Nesting Dolls: festive wonder
Santa Nesting Dolls capture the magic of the Christmas season and make great presents for kids. The largest doll is typically 6 inches tall, and most sets have 5 dolls, although there can be more, or less. They are made in the Upper Volga region of Russia, famous for its nesting doll traditions. Skilled artisans use Linden wood, famous for its durable and easy to carve qualities. Linden wood can also be sanded down to produce an incredibly smooth surface, perfect for painting and producing a high-quality finished article. Unfortunately, kids can quickly lose interest in Christmas presents, but nesting dolls are different, because they ignite the curiosity of young imaginations.

Nesting Santas: A brief history
Nesting Santas carry a long tradition of Russian folk art, where stories were often told through objects rather than words. The idea of placing one figure inside other dates to the late 19th century and is inspired by Japanese Fukuruma dolls. Sergey Malyutin was a talented Russian painter working at the Abramtsevo art workshop in the late 19th century. He sketched the very first design for what would become the iconic Russian stackable doll. His first doll consisted of a cheerful peasant woman, in traditional dress, with smaller family members hidden inside. Vasily Zvyozdochkin was a master wood‑turner, who brought Malyutin’s idea to life. He created the first doll within a doll set and laid the foundations of a true Russian icon. Nowadays stackable dolls come in multiple styles including matryoshka, classical, Semenov, famous figures and pop icons.

Santa Nesting Dolls are not just for Christmas
When I was young my mum and dad used an advent calendar every year, that my mum was given as a child, and I am now 62. Whilst this calendar is very simple it means much more than just being a calendar. Whenever I see it, my mind goes back to a very happy childhood with wonderful memories of us all being together, as one big happy family. Therefore, whenever the advent calendar comes out for Christmas, it stands for unity and happy memories. Santa nesting dolls embody the same dynamic, because they give joy in the moment, but last for generations.

Why do stackable dolls fascinate children
I am a big fan of technology, but like anything in life, it has both advantages and disadvantages. Life has never been easier, and few of us would want to go back 100 years. Today, we can watch incredible content, find instant information, and access countless services at our fingertips. However, the internet has also contributed to social isolation and made it harder to connect face to face. Nesting Santas are simple to play with, they can encourage social interaction and help to develop motor skills. For this reason, stacking dolls are more than just Christmas toys, because they bring joy in the moment and can last for generations.
